VRS100 – From the VRMA 2015 Conference in New Orleans

Wow. Episode 100 and in the same week the Vacation Rental Success Podcast surpassed 100,000 downloads. Its a big week but since I am in New Orleans for the VRMA conference this episode is a little shorter than most and covers some of the highlights from the seminars and the Vendor Showcase. Mike and I will have a bit of a celebration episode next week.

The Vacation Rental Managers Association (VRMA) conference is 3 days of quality education, networking and an enthusiastic collection of vendors all wanting to explain their products and encourage attendees to try them out.

I kicked off the conference with a meeting of managers who have been impacted by problems with Trip Advisor. Everyone felt it was valuable to meet in person and share experiences. TA are beginning to step up and have contacted all the managers in question to arrange one-on-one meetings, so watch this space for an update.

Since we are in the early stages of integrating our new rental management software and have commissioned a new website, I was able to avoid getting over-excited about many of the products on show. However, there were several that intrigued me in their innovative approach to the industry and I spent a little time talking to each of them.

A future episode will be devoted to these in more depth, but I cover one or two of these in today’s shorter show.

A highlight of the weekend was the one-on-one time I spent with my friend Matt Landau. This guy is a dynamo and an inspiration to many, and he brought together 12 of his Inner Circle to ‘mastermind’ around a very delightful dinner table. Matt posted a summary of many of these conversations here.

I mention:

I would love some sort of workshop for vacation rental OWNERS, not HA or vacation rental management compaies and not aimed at selling me a certain product. For me to take time off work, it would need to be a two day conference at least. Otherwise, it just isn’t worth the travel. Charleston is a great location, but I am prejudice! I would also like to see a large vendor area where we could see things like sheets, towels, bed bug prevention, software, marketing etc. I attended a Inn Keepers conference several years ago and they had a great vendor hall. Also, the Smart Host looks interesting. Do you know if this will only be a service you have to sign up for for an entire year, or could we just do it for a month when we are setting our pricing for the year. We only have one property so $20 a month is pretty steep for us for something we would only use once a year.

  • 100 episodes and 100,000 downloads! Congratulations Heather! Look forward to hearing more about the owner conference…

  • Hi Kathy – I’m Nick, one of the co-founders at Smart Host. Our service is $19/month per property type, and it’s month-to-month. You can cancel anytime. I’d be happy to show you a quick live demo with your property to see if it’s a fit. 🙂

  • Congrats on 100 episodes Heather! It was great to meet you in person, and thanks for the kind words about our team.

  • Thanks for your work in the VR space, Heather. Looking forward to the next 100 episodes.

  • Congratulations on 100! Would love to know more about a meetup and the blabs.

  • Kathy – I am so glad you posted this! It is something we are working on right now and your views are very encouraging. I really think we need an independent event. I’ll be coming back to you for more of your insights into what would make a good conference for you

  • Well done, a real achievement, looking forward to your new initiative – Vacation Rental Formula!
